Pressestimmen

Peter Grant is back, and now in handy-to-read-on-the-train novella format. (STARBURST)The Rivers of London series is an ever-evolving delight. (CRIME REVIEW)The Hanging Tree is definitely one of the best in the Grant/Aaronovitch pantheon. There again, so have most of the previous books in the series and the odds are the next one probably will be too. (The Bookbag)Aaronovitch deftly balances urban fantasy with the police procedural. As for Grant, he's a wonderful blend of laconic copper and, methodically researching how magic works, full-on nerd. (Crime Scene)This series is brilliant! (Teen Librarian)

I think the novella format suits Aaronovitch's style of storytelling well. I've enjoyed the more compact stories more than the latest full novels and I'm fully on board if he plans to do more 'satellite' stories from other countries with some tie ins to Peter Grant and the folly. The author did well coming up with new and integrating existing German police structure and names. I followed him asking for advice on Twitter and it was nice to see that some recommendations made it into the book. While he has created a rich world of 'special' magical creatures, for future booke I just wish he would go into more detail about the spell casting. Somehow it feels that we haven't moved much past variations of wherelights and fireballs.

A great novella , espacially as an introduction. I hope there will be more books about Tobias Winter ( and Miss Sommer) .

Better than the previous novella.

The October Man is a Short Story set in the "Rivers of London"-world from Ben Aaronovitch but plays unlike the adventures of PC Peter Grant in Germany with the german commissioner Tobi Winter and his soon to be partner Vanessa Sommer. The case are mysterious murders around the vineyards of Trier and Tobi Winter being the german apprentice of the last official practioner in Germany he is responsible for all the supernatural occurrences set place. It is well written, funny and since Tobi Winter isn't distracted by details and unnecessary back-up information the plot can be followed without big problems. It is possible to gain information of the (nonexistent) communication between the magical departments around Europe and a new insight on the happenings in Ettersberg and the role the german magicians played in WW2.Irritating are the german words - which have an english equivalent - used throughout the story. The characters and the implications of the mentioning of PC Peter Grant can be a hint on a collaborate case between Great Britain and Germany and maybe Tobi Winter is getting other cases to solve in the future. But it was fun to read and charmingly different from the complex story in London.

Mr. Aaronovitch has succeeded (in the eyes of a genuine German reader) to transfer his magic cosmos to Germany without creating any boring stereotypes. The story is coherent and not unneccesarily complex, one is always curious how it will proceed. The male hero is sufficiently different from Peter Grant. The female hero's given name Vanessa as well as the name of Germany's Frank Caffrey are a bit too English, but again their personalities are well constructed an rather credible. The rivers goods are a delight, as is the description of the German magical bureaucracy. I read it in one go and can certainly recommend the novella.
